Menu Plan Monday



Lawman and I did some grocery shopping yesterday. As we were waiting in line at the check-out, I made an observation about the young couple in front of us. You can tell a lot about a person by what is in their grocery cart. Did you know that?


Other than the health and beauty aid products in their cart, they didn't have a single food item that wasn't in it's original form. It was all fresh. They knew exactly what they were buying; beef, chicken, grapefruit, strawberries, peppers, etc. No cardboard boxes, no envelopes, no freeze-dried or processed anything. They bought meat, vegetables and fruit. That's it.


I also noticed they were both thin, had clear complexions, and they have not been influenced by the American diet. I say that because they were both Asian and I'm willing to bet that the reason they are here in the States is because they are working on a Ph.D. at the local university. They eat like they are still living in their homeland.


Then I looked in my cart.


I would venture to say that my family eats a healthy diet. My cart was full but it contained more than fresh vegetables and produce. I shop 2x a month except for filling in with milk, bread, and fresh produce. My cart had some canned items, frozen vegetables and fruit, cereal, granola bars, meat, and produce.


I mentioned my observations to Lawman when we got in the car. He had noticed it too. Then we wondered if we could do it. Well, we knew the two of us could but could our daughters? It would sure take some getting used to for them.


Spring and summer are on the way which means the best of the fresh fruits and vegetables. We eat lots of them when they are readily available at the local farmer's market. The hard part is continuing that into the fall and winter when the selection is more limited.


Next time you're grocery shopping, take a moment and see what others are buying. Then look in your cart.

Philly Chicken Sandwiches, Oven Fries, Vegetable


Chicken Spaghetti (I'll be using leftover turkey from the freezer), Roasted Sweet Potatoes & Asparagus
