an improvised start

If you are a coffee connoisseur, you may be offended by this post as I'm going to suggest you use instant coffee. My apologies in advance and if you choose not to continue reading, I understand.

I've had to improvise the start to my day this week. I'm not a coffee drinker but I do need a bit of caffeine to get my engine going. My drink of choice is Diet Coke. But, this week I've been out of Diet Coke, we've had snow and it's been cold (like sub-zero cold!). That means I haven't ventured anywhere I didn't absolutely have to go.

So I've been improvising with the above -- hot chocolate, instant coffee and half & half. Together.

I've been making mochas. They're simple and tasty and I've found that it works in a pinch. So much so that they may appear in my morning routine more often.

Here's my 'recipe' (if you can even call it that): prepare hot chocolate as directed, stir in instant coffee (I've been using about 3/4 tsp. but you could use more if you'd like a stronger coffee flavor) and then a bit of half & half to increase the creamy factor.

It's going to be 'warm' today (in the upper 30's) so I'll be going to the grocery store and you can bet Diet Coke is on the list!

I couldn't drink diet soda even if I liked it. I have bad reactions to artificial sweetners. What you've described is something I have most days, though, only not with instant coffee. For a real treat, add one of those old fashioned meltaway peppermint sticks. The peppermint sticks are good in green tea, too.

Sounds good to me...especially the creamy factor! It's amazing what we come up with when we HAVE to...isn't it?!

But I'm with you on the diet Coke...I've got to pick some up myself today...

Stay warm!

Yum, I could happily drink that when it's cold out, but I could never drink diet coke only the full strength for me.

We've been seeing on the news how cold Canada and some parts of the USA are. I can't even imagine that.

I drink instant espresso now and then in a pinch (with milk and/or hot chocolate). So I'm not particularly offended ... but I will admit that I don't understand people who don't like coffee! :-)
