opting out of plastic

I'm opting out of plastic. Yes, I am. I decided last week that I'm going to eliminate the bulk of plastic containers in our home. Not all, but most.

I have some nice Tupperware that I'm keeping but it's the disposable Ziploc containers that will be leaving. I'll be keeping a couple for Alison to use in packing her lunch for school. I hope to find some Pyrex containers with snap on lids in a 2 cup size. I've seen them as part of a Pyrex package but I don't need the whole package. Will just have to keep my eyes peeled.

This last week I put all of our leftovers in glass containers - pyrex and vintage refrigerator dishes that mom gave me have found their way into my fridge.

There is a Salvation Army store just across the street and 4 doors down from my office. When I clean out my closets, that is where I dump my stuff. Rarely do I shop there but this week on Thursday I had 15 minutes left in my lunch hour and decided I'd just pop in and see what they had. I found the two containers above. Aren't they cute? Perfect size for our popcorn. Not sure yet what I will put in the other one but I know I'll find a use for it -- not quite big enough for brown sugar or oats. Maybe chocolate chips. Any suggestions? They cost me all of $0.54.

What is your preferred method of storage? Plastic v. Glass?

I'm slowly switching over to glass, too. Like you, I've got a nice Tupperware set that I will keep. It keeps the bugs out of the flour! But other than that, I'm picking up glass pieces here and there as I find them for affordable prices. Cute finds, by the way!! Hmmm...what to put in the other one? Lentils? Powdered sugar? Nuts?

We got a set of those canisters as a wedding gift...25 1/2 years ago!! I think I have one left - the downside of glass. We also got a set of 4 glass nesting bowls with red lids - they have really come in handy through the years!

I am switching to glass, too. I bought some great glass dishes with plastic lids at Crate and Barrel. Bed Bath and Beyond in Manhattan also has a big selection ... and I think you can buy them individually. I haven't gotten rid of all my plastic containers yet but we never microwave them or wash them in the dishwasher.

I have been using canning jars....you can get them with silver lids....they match my stainless steel appliances.

I am trying to transition over to glass too!! I love my Corningware and would love to make an investment into buying more things like that, but for smaller portions!!

glass, glass, glass. a few pieces of plastic have made their way back into the house from friends or family, but i opted out of all the plastic when i moved.

i like the glass better. except for iced tea containers, with little ones, better to have plastic!

I love glass and I also LOVE things made in America-I found great anchor brand bowls with lids (and without) at Target. I am a huge fan of thrift stores and lately have been buying all kinds of vintage thermos bottles. They are not even made here anymore but of course the old ones were. I have noticed they are a hot ticket on ebay!
