Holiday Tradition | Movies

The weather here this weekend is forecasted to take a turn for the worse. Rain/Snow mix expected tomorrow. Sounds to me like good reason to stay home....and take the opportunity to watch at least one of our annual holiday movies. We have three -- White Christmas, The Holiday and Love Actually. Lawman and I prefer to watch White Christmas on Christmas Eve because that's what we did on our first Christmas Eve together. We've already watched The Holiday so I think I'll try to convince the crew to curl up with me for Love Actually. There's something about those English accents that melts my heart!

Movies have long been a part of our holiday tradition. Our first Christmas Day together as a married couple included a matinee and it's a tradition that has continued through the years. Our girls look forward to it each year and put much thought and discussion into what our selection each year should be. Given that, many of the movies we watch each holiday season are movies that we watched in the theatre on Christmas Day. It's fun to relive those memories with them.

Do you have a holiday movie that you watch each year? How did it become tradition?

Nancy,
Somehow Chevy Chase's Christmas Vacation became a holiday tradition. It is just corny enough to make us laugh each year, even though we've seen it many, many times.

I like the idea of seeing a matinee on Christmas Day! I think we did it one year, and it was alot of fun!

I have never seen Love,Actually. I will definitely have to rent it. I enjoyed The Holiday, and of course White Christmas is a classic! Bing Crosby is amazing.

Stay warm, and enjoy those movies!

No holiday movie for us. I have been thinking about our Christmas traditions - we do not have many (if any). That is something I want to change. This would be a simple start!

Okay, I've never seen White Christmas. Can we still be friends?

The Holiday is a good one too. Forgot about that one! Have you seen Holiday Inn? I actually bought it yesterday...found it for 7.99 (score!)

A wintry weekend sounds nice. Especially if we could hole up and watch movies in our pjs. We've had sooooo little snow this year. Makes me kinda sad.

It's been so long since I've seen "White Christmas" that I don't remember much about the story. I love Bing Crosby, and although I am not a huge fan of Christmas music, the song from the movie is one of my favorites.

I haven't seen "The Holiday", but one of my co-op students recommended it, and I've been meaning to watch it ever since. "Love Actually" is one I really love but haven't thought of in a while. I'll be stopping by Netflix and putting both (or maybe all three) in my queue.

My favorite movie of all time and from any genre is "It's a Wonderful Life". I don't believe people go to heaven immediately when they die and then become angels who have to earn their wings. (I think this is the main reason Danny hates this movie.) I think the message of the movie is a good one, though. I would watch "It's a Wonderful Life" at least once a year, and not only at Christmas, but it is rarely tolerated by the other members of my family. Maybe I will use Danny's laptop to watch it while wrapping presents in our room this afternoon.

You know that I LOVE the 3 movies that you mentioned - another I like to watch during the holidays (and it's one of Ian's favorites!) is "Family Stone." If you haven't seen if for awhile, you should put it on your Netflix queue and watch it with the fam. I'm going to have to dig it out and watch it while I (finally) get the tree decorated this weekend!

Love Actually and The Holiday are two of my favorite movies! I've been saving The Holiday for the winter break. Not sure any of my boys will join me though... The one we watched for years was The Christmas Story with the boy who just wanted a BB Gun so badly, to which his mother would respond, but "you'll just shoot your eye out." It also has the scene where another boy gets his tongue frozen on the basketball goal post. A truly classic movie, especially for mothers of boys :)!
